The Batman Part II – Following the widespread success of The Batman in 2022, a sequel to the DC film is in the works. This time, it will be into a more deliberate DC Elseworlds framework by DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, distinguishing these productions from those within the main DC Universe continuity.
Plot Line of The Batman Part II
The conclusion of The Batman places Bruce Wayne and Gotham City in an unprecedented situation not explored in previous films. Despite Bruce thwarting The Riddler’s plot against Gotham’s mayor-elect, Bella Reál, the city finds itself submerged underwater. Drawing inspiration from No Man’s Land plot and Scott Snyder’s New 52 run Zero Year, Gotham now faces imminent catastrophe.
While speculations circulate about Hush potentially joining the cast as a sequel antagonist, official confirmation is still pending. For those unfamiliar, Hush serves as an alternate alter ego of The Riddler, the previous film’s villain. However, the conjecture is the movie will add a new dimension to the character and the narrative.
Robert Pattinson and Matt Reeves have both indicated their interest in introducing the Court of Owls and eventually incorporating Dick Grayson, also known as Robin, into the Batman storyline. Comprising Gotham’s affluent families and corrupt elites, the Court of Owls operates as a clandestine society that has wielded influence over the city for decades. Given Matt Reeves’ demonstrated proficiency in handling ambitious narratives, introducing this villainous society aligns well with his directorial strengths.
While deviating significantly from Robin’s traditional origin story, integrating Dick Grayson into the Court of Owls could offer a novel approach to introducing the character. The Court is notorious for abducting children from circuses and training them as highly skilled assassins called Talons. Considering Grayson’s roots in The Flying Graysons circus act, this reinterpretation would undoubtedly present a bold and distinctive take on the character.
Expected Cast Members
Upon the eventual release of The Batman 2, audiences can anticipate the return of Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/The Batman. The cast will likely include Jeffrey Wright reprising his role as Lieutenant James Gordon and Andy Serkis returning as Batman’s steadfast butler, Alfred Pennyworth. Zoë Kravitz may also make a return as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, although the character is speculated to have relocated from Gotham City to Blüdhaven, which is Nightwing’s future domain.
Colin Farrell’s portrayal of The Penguin will make a return in his HBO Max show. The character will likely assert influence over Gotham’s criminal underworld. Meanwhile, Paul Dano’s The Riddler might make a reduced appearance, potentially behind the bars of Arkham Asylum. Joining him in this sinister setting is the mysterious ‘Unseen Arkham Prisoner,’ portrayed by Barry Keoghan’s The Joker.
Barry Keoghan’s The Joker was hinted at in the final scenes of The Batman. And, the film’s associated website, Rataalada, has unveiled a cipher implying a potential team-up with Paul Dano’s Riddler. When questioned about this possibility, Keoghan remained tight-lipped, stating to Etalk, “I can’t really say anything about that… It would be exciting, wouldn’t it?”
In addition to these speculations, there have been unconfirmed rumors about the inclusion of Clayface in the rogues’ gallery. This adds another layer of intrigue to the unfolding narrative.
All About the Villains
While the plot details of Pattinson’s upcoming movie remain largely undisclosed, numerous names from Batman’s Rogues Gallery have been suggested. The prospect of including Clayface, Pyg, and Hush is thrilling as it would mark the debut of these iconic villains. Notably, Scarecrow was previously portrayed by Cillian Murphy in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy.
Additional speculations indicate the return of Pattinson’s prior adversaries, The Riddler (Paul Dano) and The Penguin (Colin Farrell). It further expanded the roster of potential antagonists for the sequel. Fans are also eager for more of Barry Keoghan’s Joker, teased briefly at the end of The Batman.
While production for the film is slated to commence next year for a release in fall 2025, speculations about the ensemble cast have surfaced. However, James Gunn, in response to recent rumors, unequivocally dismissed claims of Professor Pyg, Scarecrow, Clayface, Hush, and Dick Grayson making appearances in The Batman Part II, stating that these rumors are “totally made up.”
It’s advisable to approach all rumors surrounding The Batman 2’s villains with caution until officially confirmed.
The Batman Part II will be out on October 3, 2025.
