Star Trek 4 release remains elusive, but a new Star Trek movie is in the works. A prequel set decades before the 2009 reboot was reported in January 2024. JJ Abrams, through his Bad Robot company, will produce, with Toby Haynes directing and Seth Grahame-Smith penning the script. Despite this, the existence of the prequel doesn’t necessarily rule out Star Trek 4 as of January 2024. Unfortunately, no recent updates on the movie’s status are available. Here are all the details on Star Trek 4 release and more.
Previous Updates on Star Trek 4
In September 2023, Lindsey Anderson Beer, the writer, assured that the movie was still on the tracks. Later that month, Variety reported Paramount’s intention to expedite scripts for a “planned reboot” of Star Trek. It remains uncertain whether this aligns with the recent prequel or constitutes a separate project. Chris Pine, in November 2023, expressed uncertainty, stating to ComicBook.com that he was unaware of any plans.

The much-anticipated Star Trek movie appeared to be gaining momentum in February 2022 with the announcement of JJ Abrams returning as producer and Matt Shakman as the director, surprising both the cast and fans. Regrettably, Shakman departed the project in August 2022 to direct Fantastic Four for Marvel. Subsequently, in September 2022, Paramount removed the movie from the release calendar. However, there’s a silver lining as a director search is reportedly still underway.
As of March 2023, JJ Abrams, involved in the production of all three movies in the reboot trilogy and directing two, confirmed an ongoing search for a director. In an interview with Esquire, he mentioned, “I will say it’s the first time [since the original reboot] that we have a story that feels as compelling as the first one.”
However, considering Chris Pine’s characterization of the franchise as “cursed,” optimism about its progress may vary.
Star Trek 4 Release And Cast
Star Trek 4 Release: In the event the movie comes to fruition, it would be surprising if a completely new cast were introduced. It is more probable that familiar faces will return. It includes Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldaña (Uhura), Karl Urban (Bones), John Cho (Sulu), and Simon Pegg (Scotty) would make their returns.
As we already know, Star Trek 4 currently lacks an official release date. No rumors have surfaced regarding a potential rescheduling.
In June 2022, before Matt Shakman’s departure, Paramount boss Brian Robbins affirmed that development was in progress for the fourth Star Trek. He expressed, “We’re deep into it with JJ Abrams, and it feels like we’re getting close to the starting line and excited about where we’re going creatively.”
As mentioned earlier, Star Trek 4 is currently without a set release date, and its initial schedule for December 22, 2023, has been indefinitely postponed with no rumors circulating about a potential rescheduling.
