Rohit Sharma Replaced by Hardik Pandya As MI Captain: With his resignation as Mumbai Indians captain, Rohit Sharma brought an end to a chapter in IPL. Since taking the captaincy throne in 2013, veteran opener Rohit has led MI to five IPL victories. Under Rohit’s leadership, the Mumbai Indians have won five titles: in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. In the run-up to the 2024 season, record-breaking Mumbai Indians announced all-rounder Hardik Pandya as their new captain.
Learn More About the Replacement
Before the mini-auction in Dubai, Pandya, the all-format captain Rohit’s deputy with Team India, recently returned to the Mumbai Indians from Gujarat Titans (GT) in an all-cash transaction. As Rohit’s deputy in the 2023 World Cup, Pandya established himself as a key member of Team India’s management group by organizing the Gujarat Titans’ championship victory in their inaugural campaign. Last season, Pandya’s Gujarat team faced Dhoni’s CSK in the final after winning the IPL trophy with GT. Pandya reportedly had one requirement when he left GT to join MI: to lead the franchise in the cash-rich league.
Rohit Sharma As the Leader
Rohit has led the Mumbai team to remarkable success throughout his time as captain. In the history of the IPL, Rohit and the venerable MS Dhoni are the most successful captains. The seasoned gloveman led CSK in the IPL even after he gave up his captaincy in international cricket. The 36-year-old Rohit led Team India, led by Virat Kohli, to the 2023 One Day International (ODI) World Cup final. Rohit Sharma aka “the Hitman,” led Team India to the T20 World Cup semifinals the previous year.
Rohit, who is entering the latter stages of his remarkable career, last participated in a T20 international match for the 2006 world winners in Australia during the World Cup 2022. In six T20 World Cup games, Rohit scored 116 runs at an average of just 19.33. The skipper of India scored just one half-century at the ICC tournament the previous year. One month following India’s 2023 World Cup elimination, Rohit has not yet addressed his T20I future. There’s also a lot of conjecture that the Hitman has already represented the Asian giants in his final T20I match.
Change of Leaders
After his IPL triumph with GT, Pandya led India in Rohit’s absence. The seasoned opener is expected to be replaced as the team’s white-ball captain by Pandya. In 13 of India’s last 25 T20I matches, Pandya has served as captain. As a result, MI also decided to shell out a lot of cash for the former GT captain, who is currently favored to succeed Rohit internationally. A seamless transition at MI will be ensured by the change in captaincy since Mumbai has also named Pandya as Rohit’s replacement.
Game of Numbers
As one of the most prolific scorers in T20 cricket history, Rohit concluded his poorest IPL season as a batter in 2022. In the 2022 season, Rohit failed to score even one half-century for the first time since his IPL debut in 2008. In 14 innings, the former MI captain scored 268 runs and averaged 19.14 in the 2022 IPL, in the 10-team IPL 2022 season, MI came in tenth place. During the same season, Pandya made his IPL captaincy debut and GT finished atop the table.
The previous season, Rohit’s MI advanced to the IPL playoffs. But Rohit only scored 332 runs in 16 IPL 2023 games. In the MI batting charts, the former Mumbai Indians came in behind players like Tilak Verma, Cameron Green, Ishan Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav. As captain of the Mumbai Indians, Rohit had 87 wins and 67 losses in 158 games. Rohit will play as a pure batter for MI to go back to his best. His claim to be Team India’s captain will be strengthened by a strong season at MI.
