Approximately a year after The Last of Us premiered on HBO, it swiftly gained recognition as one of the most talked-about television series in recent memory. The live-action adaptation of the beloved video game series is currently preparing for its second season, sparking numerous discussions among fans of the franchise. The destiny of Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) in The Last of Us Part II stands out as a pivotal plot development, leaving some to speculate on how it will be translated to The Last of Us TV show. In a recent interview with Deadline, Pascal acknowledged the potential for Season 2 to deviate from the source material concerning Joel and disclosed that he is not entirely clear on the plan.
Pedro Pascal on Joel
“I think that they’re always going to find ways to build on the incredible source material that they have, and surprise us with how they can use that material in a different format, like a television show,” Pascal explained. “But I wouldn’t want to spoil it for anybody, and the truth is, I don’t actually have all of the information, as of yet.”
Pedro Pascal’s recent remarks follow hints from The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin, suggesting that the TV series might diverge from the original storyline concerning Joel. In The Last of Us Part II, players are aware that Joel meets his demise early in the game when a new character, Abby, strikes him with a golf club. This pivotal moment leads the narrative to shift its focus to Ellie and Abby as the central protagonists.
“This should be fairly obvious to anyone by now, but I don’t fear killing characters,” Mazin explained in an interview last year. “But the important thing to note is that neither Neil [Druckmann, who co-created and exec-produces the series with Mazin] nor I feel constrained by the source material.”
Fresh additions to the cast for The Last of Us Season 2 will feature Kaitlyn Dever, known for her roles in “Booksmart” and “No One Will Save You,” portraying Abby. Isabela Merced, recognized for her roles in “Madame Web” and “Superman: Legacy,” will take on the character of Dina. Additionally, Young Mazino from “Beef” and “Prodigal Son” will be playing Jesse in the upcoming season.
