Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Has A New Release Now

The release date for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is undergoing a change. Originally slated to hit theaters on May 24th, the newest installment in 20th Century Studios’ rebooted Planet of the Apes franchise will now premiere two weeks earlier on May 10th. This adjustment allows “Planet of the Apes” to avoid the crowded Memorial Day weekend, which includes the releases of Warner Bros.’ “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and Sony’s “The Garfield Movie.” With no competition on May 10th, the shift aims to secure a more substantial box office for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.”

An additional benefit for the 20th Century Studios film is that these extra two weeks for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” ensure more IMAX screenings, which typically command a higher ticket price, thereby generating increased revenue. Notably, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” will be the first film in the franchise to be presented in IMAX. On May 10th, competing releases include the Amy Winehouse-focused “Fade to Black” and the opening of “The Fall Guy,” featuring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, which debuts a week earlier. The subsequent week sees the release of the fictional character film “IF,” starring John Krasinski and Ryan Reynolds.

In “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” 300 years have elapsed since the death of Caesar. According to actor Kevin Durand, his character Proximus takes on the role of the antagonist in the upcoming sequel. Proximus has embraced the title of “Caesar” to signify his enlightenment and position himself as the one to drive the evolution of apes. Durand explained that over the substantial time that has passed since Caesar played a pivotal role in liberating apes from captivity in “War for the Planet of the Apes,” “Caesar” has become a name Proximus adopted to signal his commitment to pushing apes towards further development.

“Caesar is almost a religious figure, and Proximus has taken on the name ‘Caesar’ because it was the highest position held in ape society,” Durand explained to Empire Magazine. “It was a self-proclamation that was achieved by any means necessary, to ensure that apes continue to evolve. So you’re seeing the influence and the evolution of what Caesar left. And like every morsel of human history, there’s always some type of tyrant who comes along and scares everyone into believing them.”
