Joker 2 Director Reveals New Look At Joaquin Phoenix And Lady Gaga
Joker 2 will be out next year! In 2019, the Joker from DC’s live-action productions pleasantly surprised audiences, transforming the iconic DC villain into the central figure of an award-winning film. Despite having a conclusive conclusion, the film left room for further exploration. This prospect will be in the upcoming 2024 release, “Joker: Folie a Deux.”
Todd Phillips, the director and co-writer of “Folie a Deux,” shared a fresh glimpse of the film on Christmas day. This sneak peek includes two new images, featuring Harleen Quinzel (Lady Gaga) and Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix). One image portrays Arthur behind a cell door in Arkham Asylum, while the other depicts him in full Joker makeup standing alongside Harleen.
About Joker 2
“Joker: Folie a Deux” will take a unique musical approach, exploring the complex and dark romance between Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck / Joker and Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn. A significant portion of the film will unfold within the confines of Arkham Asylum. Notably, the cast includes Zazie Beetz, Brendon Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Jacob Lofland, making appearances in various roles.
“It makes me so happy, because I said from the very beginning that all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters, the way Macbeth or Batman, always gets passed from great actor to great actor,” Margot Robbie previously said of Lady Gaga taking on the role.
“It’s kind of like someone gets to do their Batman, or someone gets to do their Macbeth. I feel like, in not so many cases, are they female characters – Queen Elizabeth I, but beyond that, which I got to have a crack out as well, which I was honored to do. I was like, ‘Wow! Cate Blanchett did Queen Elizabeth I. Now I get to.’ It’s such an honor to have built a foundation strong enough that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get to have a go at playing. And I think she’ll do something incredible with it.”
Is the Movie In the DC Universe?
“Joker: Folie a Deux” falls under the category of a DC Elseworlds production. This signifies its placement outside the established canon of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s upcoming DC Universe films and exclusive television series on Max. In a recent post, Gunn disclosed his participation in Folie a Deux. However, Gunn emphasized that this Joker sequel is among the select few upcoming DC films directly overseen by Warner Bros. Pictures, stemming from its initial development under the studio’s guidance.
“Todd had Joker in full swing by the time we came onboard – I’ve watched and given notes, but it is mostly with WB, where it started,” Gunn wrote. “Everything forward in live-action we’re involved with.”
