Jo Koy: Any host of an awards ceremony must be prepared for criticism, as it demands resilience and a sense of humor, knowing that online reactions can be tough. Golden Globes host Jo Koy experienced this firsthand after his opening monologue at the recent event. His jokes and jabs at some well-known personalities didn’t resonate well with many critics, viewers, and even Taylor Swift.
Continuing the tradition of hosts like Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, Tina Fey, and five-time host Ricky Gervais, Jo Koy faced swift backlash after his jokes. He targeted Taylor Swift, making a quip about the Golden Globes airing after a Kansas City Chiefs football game, a team linked to Swift through her relationship with Travis Kelce. Koy’s remark stirred controversy.“
“As you know, we came on after a football doubleheader. The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? On the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift, I swear.”
This prompted a quick cut to Swift, who appeared unimpressed while sipping her drink. Subsequently, Swift’s fans took to the internet to express their displeasure, marking the initial wave of criticism against Koy’s hosting skills.
Koy had an opportunity to address the harsh reactions he faced for hosting the show. During an appearance on GMA3: What You Need to Know, he admitted that he might not have been fully prepared for the challenges of hosting the awards. He stated:
“I had fun. You know, it was a moment that I’ll always remember. It’s a tough room. It was a hard job, I’m not going to lie…I’d be lying if [I said] it doesn’t hurt. I hit a moment there where I was like, ‘Ah.’ Hosting is just a tough gig. Yes, I’m a stand-up comic but that hosting position it’s a different style. I kind of went in and did the writer’s thing. We had 10 days to write this monologue. It was a crash course. I feel bad, but I got to still say I loved what I did.”
Jo Koy Will Likely Not Host The Golden Globes Again
Koy’s post-event analysis indicates a clear reluctance to potentially return for another hosting stint next year. When asked about the possibility of stepping back into the role, Koy expressed: “That’s a tough gig, I’m not going to lie. I love the art of standup. It was cool the opportunity came to me, but hosting is just a beast. That’s about it.”
Reflecting on the Taylor Swift moment, Koy acknowledged that the particular joke was a moment he wasn’t particularly happy with, describing it as “a little flat” and “weird.” His initial intention was to poke fun at the NFL’s frequent use of cutaways, which he felt the Golden Globes didn’t need to do. However, the abrupt cut to Swift altered the reception of the joke.
Defending his performance, Koy emphasized that he was given the hosting job only 10 days before the event, highlighting the mix of his material and material written by others. In response to one less successful line during the telecast, Koy acknowledged it with a follow-up remark.
“Some [jokes] I wrote, some other people wrote. Yes, I got the gig 10 days ago! You want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up. You’re kidding me, right? Slow down, I wrote some of these and they are the ones you are laughing at.” – JO KOY
