Avatar 4 Filming Update: As we anticipate the upcoming release of the third installment in the Avatar series, Avatar 3, set to premiere on December 19, 2025, production for the fourth Avatar film has commenced. Stephen Lang, reprising his role, recently disclosed that filming for Avatar 4 is underway. He shared a behind-the-scenes photo featuring himself in a motion capture suit, adorned with his name, character identity as “Colonel Miles Quaritch,” and the emblem “Deja Blu We Will Tread on You.”
Avatar 4 Filming Update from Stephen Lang
Accompanied by the caption “Deja Blu all over again,” the photo provides a sneak peek into the return of Stephen Lang in his role as Colonel Miles Quaritch. Initially introduced as the primary antagonist in the inaugural Avatar film in 2009, Quaritch has evolved into a more intricate character, particularly after the release of 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water. Resurrected as a Recombinant, a fully sentient hybrid of human and Na’vi, Quaritch is implanted with the recorded memories and personality traits of the human they were previously. Furthermore, he is revealed as the father of Jack Champion’s character, Miles “Spider” Socorro, a human child who was adopted by Jake and Neytiri.
James Cameron, the director, has disclosed that Stephen Lang’s character, Quaritch, will maintain a significant presence throughout the entire Avatar franchise, appearing in all the sequels.
“The interesting conceit of the Avatar sequels is it’s pretty much the same characters. There are new characters and a lot of new settings and creatures, so I’m taking characters you know and putting them in unfamiliar places and moving them on this greater journey. But it’s not a whole bunch of new characters every time. There’s not a new villain every time, which is interesting. Same guy. Same motherf—er through all four movies. He is so good and he just gets better. I know Stephen Lang is gonna knock this out of the park.”
Avatar 4 Release Date And More
There is still some time to go before we can experience Avatar 4 in theaters, as it is slated for release on December 21, 2029. The concluding installment, Avatar 5, is anticipated to hit theaters on December 19, 2031.
In the meantime, our focus shifts to the upcoming release of Avatar 3, which promises to unveil a plethora of new creatures, cultures, and an unfamiliar foe known as the ‘Ash People’—a tribe of Na’vi with a connection to fire. This installment is set to introduce fresh elements and challenges for the audience to explore.
“The big [creative] advance in [‘Avatar 3’] is just going to be greater character depth. We’re seeing new cultures, new creatures — all the same stuff you’d expect from an ‘Avatar’ movie, but the whole idea of this cycle of films is to live with these people and go on this epic journey with them. So I think it’s not about, ‘We’re going to show you the best water [VFX] ever done’ — but you get more into the heart and soul of the characters. And there’s some very interesting new characters that come in as well. This is a journey over time. It will play out through movie three, into movie four and movie five. There’s an epic cycle to the whole thing.”
Scheduled for release on December 19, 2025, Avatar 3 boasts a star-studded cast featuring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao, Britain Dalton, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Jack Champion, Michelle Yeoh, David Thewlis, and Oona Chaplin.
